6 Tips on How to Get Ahead in IT Service Management

For many people, their career is the center of their lives, and it is of dire importance that they feel valued in this aspect of their world. Hard work and perseverance equate to bonuses, raises, and promotions, but unfortunately this does not always happen at the pace we would like. IT service management (ITSM) is a difficult career path in which to reap the benefits of promotion, because it is often heavily reliant on the senior team members. Despite this, there is hope. In today’s world, employers expect their employees to take more responsibility not only in work, but in their careers. If you want it, go for it.

Six Tips to Progress an ITSM Career

  1. It is not all about who you know.
  2. Step out of your comfort zone.
  3. Nominate yourself for awards.
  4. Find a mentor.
  5. Take ownership of your mistakes.
  6. Emphasize your worth.

Contrary to popular belief, your career is not all about who you know, but rather it is about who knows you. Waiting around for that Cinderella moment where you meet the person who will change your life is foolish. Take initiative and be known for something that puts you on the map. Along with this idea, you need to take a step outside your box of norms and take on tasks that are new to you. Show your manager that you have innovative ideas and are willing to try new things.

It may seem in bad taste to some, but to nominate yourself for an award is not always a bad idea. You and your team work diligently and some recognition of that is excellent publicity for the company.

Finding a person who has been where you are and ultimately got where you want to be can be incredibly beneficial. You can have an example of what to do along with someone to go to with questions. Everyone makes mistakes and that is okay. Take the criticism of those around you seriously and move forward to a better result. You are helping the company reach its potential, which means that you too have immense value. Do not be afraid to emphasize this and fight for what you deserve.
