Particularly in IT, novel approaches are always sprouting up. It is imperative that an effective leader embrace these unfamiliar technologies and rapidly adapt to learn how they should be run. It may also prove valuable to have a wide general knowledge. One never knows when they will need to have a conversation about the political structure in France (for instance).
A leader is often associated with the term “expert.” It is easy to get swept up by this notoriety and ignore those less experienced; however, this is a big mistake. There is always an opportunity to learn something new, and approaching a project like this may allow for novel perspectives and better outcomes.
Leaders are role models, and people will often look to them to see how to behave. A leader needs to practice what they preach and act how they would like everyone to behave. Positivity is contagious, and leaders who exude enthusiasm often inspire others to do the same.
Lastly, it is important to have a plan to become a leader. If being a leader is truly the goal, then progress should be analyzed periodically. No one is going to plan your career for you. It is up to you to take the wheel and make the decisions that will put you where you need to be. Enroll in leadership training courses or take initiative within the company.
