Top 10 Leadership and Management Tips for All-Around Success

If what you’ve been doing so far as a manager/leader isn’t getting you the right results, then it’s time to try something new. “It can take years to become an overnight success,” jokes Roberta Matusen in an article for TLNT, and that’s only if you are willing to work hard and follow the good advice of others. Here are some tips to become the best you yet.

Feedback

For instance, have you considered the idea that your current leadership style might be an impediment to company progress? That’s admittedly a hard pill to swallow, but if you’re proactive about garnering feedback from associates, it’s a wholly avoidable fate.

Calling Shots & Being You

Ultimately your employees will perform better if they’ve got an appropriate role model – that’s you! But while acting as a model employee, you also need to acknowledge where your role is different. Translated: when something goes wrong, and blame gets passed around like in “hot potato,” the game ends with you, who are responsible for all outcomes regardless of their source. Whether there’s a need to fire or to inspire, the shots are called by you.

Hiring, Firing, & Inspiring

And when it comes to hiring employees, Matusen advises you to “hire for fit, train for skill,” indispensable advice in the IT industry where talent can be scarce. The new environment these hires enter should be welcoming and prepared for their arrival, whether they’re an entry-level intern or a manager in training. And you may not always pick a good apple, but when that happens, it’s your responsibility to keep them out of the barrel.

Providing Tools

The people who work hard for you are an indispensable investment. Acknowledge their efforts by giving them the tools they need provide the best possible service to customers; there’s really nothing as self-affirming for a manager as that.

Individual Strength & Team Strength

Attend to your strengths, but acknowledge your weaknesses. That way, others can tend to your weaknesses while acknowledging your strengths. It’s tough to trust others, but that’s one of the basics of management. Your success depends on the triumph of the team, so get out there and be part of it!

Continual Improvement

Lastly, others expect a lot from you, but you’re also responsible for your own continual improvement. Take advantage of training seminars and ultimately seek the help of a mentor. Every leader needs a leader they can aspire to be.
