How Humility Can be Your Secret Weapon as a Boss

People always root for the person who is humble, so it behooves bosses to be humble too. Simon Sinek writes for Inc. about how humility helps bosses get ahead. He relates a short story of a former Under Secretary of Defense presenting at a conference. The man explained in his presentation how he had actually presented at the conference the previous year as well, when he was presently the Under Secretary. Back then, he was flown out to the event business class, where cars were always waiting to chauffeur him places, and he got a ceramic coffee cup before presenting. However, now that he was no longer Under Secretary, he flew to the conference coach, had to take taxis everywhere, and got his coffee in a Styrofoam cup. The man’s lesson for the crowd was that chauffeurs and ceramic cups do not exist for you—they exist for your position. Eventually, someone else will have that position, and the perks will go away. It is up to you to make sure you can still be proud of the work you have done and the person you are when the perks are all gone.
