5 Things to Know about Starting a Business with a Friend

Your bosom buddy and you have decided to go into business together. Will it end with you ripping the heart out of your buddy’s bosom? Erica Cerulo helps preempt such situations by giving five tips for working together in an article for The Muse.

Matters of the Heart

First, use your history to your advantage, as you probably already know the areas in which each of you excels. Second, you need to “learn how to fight” with each other, being able to disagree strongly but also able to compartmentalize the feelings to the given subject. Third, force time apart so you do not get sick of each other. Fourth, even though it is the two of you versus the world, try to include the rest of your eventual employees in that world too, so that they feel valued and in the loop. Fifth, in spite of the third tip, continue to find time to just be friends. This will remind you why you wanted to get in business with the other person in the first place.
