Perhaps you’ve mastered the art of communication at a certain level, but a good PM needs to be comfortable talking to everyone – executives, team members, shareholders, etc. Secondly, your job is to lead the team, sure, but what you’ll also face as a PM are company meetings where you’ll be required to serve up enticing information and to sell your project ideas to stakeholders.
A more technical aspect of the PM’s job is the earned value management system (EVMS). It is definitely possible to get this one wrong, and not understanding how to read the metrics data can easily lead to misinformation and overall confusion.
Getting the right resources together is somewhat of an art. Good resource finding involves lots of hard work, as well as a penchant for getting to know the right people. There’s a steep learning curve for some, but it’s an essential skill to possess from the start. Technical skills will only get you so far, as “verbal and written communication, decision-making, and negotiation skills [are]imperative to doing one’s job more effectively.” And lastly, never underestimate the impact that a team meeting, held regularly, can have on your ability to distribute information efficiently, set time restraints, allocate resources, solicit feedback, and update stakeholders.
