4 IT Silos you Need to Ditch Fast

There are four organizational silos that a good IT leader must dismantle as soon as possible. In an InformationWeek article, the late Lawrence Garvin visits each and traces their likely development away from the legacy IT model. The shift to cloud computing and converged infrastructures will have many IT pros rethinking, and even changing, their respective roles.

Silo #1: The Network Pro

The networking silo is slated to be the most shaken of the four. Where once they toiled only in cables and cable connections, the network pro must now leave their hallowed haven of hardware, must set out on a journey to software-driven configurations where data flits around system buses inside converged hardware chassis.

Silo #2: The Database Admin

The database administrators will be mostly spared from this silo-shattering event. They can hunker down in their respective positions with the reassurance that a database is still a database. However, as emphasis shifts to the performance of whole applications, these stable specialists will need to stay tuned to all interfacing resources, including networks and other applications.

Silo #3: The Systems Admin

One of the greatest changes for the systems administrator will be the presence of new systems to administer. By new systems we of course mean that virtualization and cloud platforms will be added to a list of other domains that include networking, databases and / or storage. As worlds converge, the systems admin will also face stiff competition from more seasoned professionals in networking and database administration.

Silo #4: The Storage Specialist

Although its appearance is quite recent, this silo will likely be the quickest to go. After all, storage systems were only needed because disk spindles were too numerous to fit into a single chassis. Once the solid-state storage device (SSD) was invented, the need for elaborate and power hungry storage systems declined, putting storage specialists on an ever-shrinking island that will eventually disappear.
