The Project Management Institute provides a helpful and concise guide for how young managers can earn the respect of their often older peers. You want to begin by learning all you can from older, more seasoned project managers and keeping your advocates close. Be open and available, because you will be surprised how many friends and contacts you make. As a manager, find your niche and be persistent about exceling at it. Focus on results, and volunteer for additional leadership opportunities as they appear, in order to broaden your skills. These are basic tips, but they still have their place.
