It may sound obvious, but you really need to understand how and why people get promoted at your company in the first place. Sometimes it is formalized, sometimes not, but you need to learn for sure. Then cut out any frivolous excesses like social media, because if you are going to work 40 hours, you should work 40 hours. Casually share your accomplishments with fellow colleagues to keep your name in the hat, chat with new people on lunch breaks, and always be acting on the feedback you receive.
