According to Steve Banker in an article for Forbes, retail, health care, and shale oil are undergoing big changes in their supply chains. Retail is dealing with omni-channel commerce, where buy online, ship-to-store or buy online, pick-up-at-store are becoming pervasive options. Healthcare is being most obviously transformed by the Affordable Health Care Act, so that, for instance, hospitals will now take a major financial hit if they have to readmit a patient after the patient has already had a procedure done. This industry needs to find a way to lower cost structure while improving patient outcomes. And lastly, the shale oil & gas industry, spurred by innovation from independent owner operators, has increased its focus on developing new production techniques. This improves the value chain.
