12 Tips for Managing Today’s IT Challenges

When you’re a CIO or IT manager, there’s never a dull moment. Aside from managing precious time and resources, success is often a matter of honing your IT strategy. Karen Frenkel for CIO Insight proposes a flash-review of these twelve indispensable IT tactics.

1 – Important Stuff In-House, 2 – Always Add Value, 3 – Use outside Support

The business must still differentiate itself from the competition and deliver value it its own unique way. Therefore keep certain applications and “intellectual capital” in-house. By the same logic, a good CIO knows what goes and what stays. Focus on IT’s core competitive assets to stay on the same page with the business. You can always find outside support for non-central activities like infrastructure, monitoring, and email.

4 – Invest in People, 5 – Reward Employees, 6- Never Stop Recruiting

Keep an eye or your top talent and instill a sense of loyalty to keep them on board with your company. Reward these high achievers by giving them a path to grow along, trusting them with key responsibilities, and offering substantial training opportunities. But keep a pool of new talent waiting in the wing in case replacement becomes a necessity.

7 – Always Communicate, 8 – Prioritize Projects, 9 – Develop a Network of Partners

Business priorities frequently change and, trying as this may be, IT must change its priorities to reflect the current competitive stance. To spread the company mission, keep the blood of the department circulating by communicating often and well. Also, having a set of go-to vendors on hand will ensure that, while you may never have all your assets in-house, at least you’ll have all of your assets.

10 – Don’t Fear the Cloud, 11 – Keep Security as a Priority, 12 – Keep IT Simple

The cloud is one of those revolutionary paradigm changes in how IT is conducted. Don’t be left high and dry when it comes to aiding the business with the latest innovations. On the other hand, security is never old hat. As threats continue to evolve, so must your IT outfit. At the end of the day, all the strategies and tactics in the world won’t make a difference if you can’t condense them and deliver your message in a concise and convincing way.
