The world of technology is changing so fast that standing still feels like moving backwards. You might experience this sensation while traveling by train. Observing a passing train moving at a faster pace but in the same direction is a truly disorienting effect! Dr. Jim Anderson in his blog, The Accidental Successful CIO, seems to suggest that this effect is shared by today’s CIOs.
A Brave New IT
If IT was ever about keeping the lights on while dispensing the latest and greatest technology, that version of IT is gone. Welcome to the brave new world of the CIO: where sleek, affordable, and powerful devices and software materialize for customers in mere seconds minus any input from IT.
Anderson points out three cutting edge technologies he believes are instrumental to the business transformations to come. The first is robotics.
Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto
One of the most immediate impacts of these new technologies will be that a lot of manufacturing jobs that had been moved off shore will now be returning to the country where the end customers live. Robots that can work side-by-side with humans and perform assembly tasks are now available for only US$22,000.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) & 3D Printing
A second incoming trend is Artificial Intelligence (AI). Anderson cites voice recognition systems and self-driving vehicles as two of the most pertinent AI applications for business. Lastly, the emergence of 3D printing promises to reconstruct the entire notion of mechanical assemblage.
No New Toys without IT
What the business doesn’t know will hurt IT. In this age of profound transformation, businesses anticipate (nay, expect) disruptive change. But despite the forecasting and prepping, a business without an equally savvy IT department will be able to do little more than salivate at the sight of flashy technologies, since they will not have the slightest idea of how to implement and use them.
