Top 7 IT Certifications to Jumpstart Your Job

IT professionals used to wear a single hat to work. Now they wear many. Tony Kontzer urges pros to get certified – infrastructure certified to be exact. In a post for InformationWeek India, Kontzer describes seven highly regarded ‘certs’ for increasing one’s hat collection of IT skills.

Open Source

1 – Red Hat Certified Architect: Making smarter IT investments means embracing commodity hardware and open-source software. Red Hat offers both:

…infrastructure pros are well advised to pursue the highest level of certifications from Red Hat, the predominant provider of open-source cloud, virtualisation, storage, and middleware technologies.

2 – VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX): For managing virtual assets there can be no better source of training. By offering data center virtualisation skills for the software-defined data center and infrastructure-as-a-service, VMware positions the IT pro to maximize the virtualisation phenomenon.

3 – Citrix Certified Professional: Virtualisation does not stop with the cloud. A Citrix cert can bring the skills of infrastructure pros closer to the user with applications and desktops that rely on back end virtualisation.

4 – SNIA Certified Storage Network Expert (SCSN-E): The rise of big data technologies and increasing demand make this vendor-neutral storage certification a major career asset, increasing employee market value 30-40% according to Kontzer.

5 – Certified Wireless Network Administrator (CWNA): Designing, building, and maintaining wireless networks has become a thing of necessity for every business, making the CWNA cert equally essential.

6 – Cisco Certified Design Professional/Network Professional (CCDP/CCNP): For networking professionals, a Cisco certification provides knowledge on building scalable internetworks, multilayer-switched networks in a variety of areas and with a focus on planning, implementation, verification, and troubleshooting of local and WA business networks.

7 – Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP): Information security, if it wasn’t already a top concern, is in high demand for preventing network breaches to protect data on the cloud and in mobile devices.
