Soft skills and leadership coach Eric Bloom was confronted by an interesting question when he attended a professional networking event: What makes an IT person successful? The question, thus phrased, inspired Bloom to elaborate on his reflections in an article at IT World.  He feels that there are ultimately 12 characteristics of any successful IT professional.

1. Love of Technology

Everyone knows that doing something you love helps you do it better. What’s more, being involved and excited is inspiring to others.

2. Understanding Data

A thorough comprehension of a company’s data flow makes you informed about the organization’s business model, internal processes, and overall IT structure.

3. Understanding Business

This trait pairs itself to the ongoing need for IT to align with business needs.

4. Comfort with “Techie” and “Non-Techie” Language

Speaking in tech terms (for most business people) is like speaking a foreign language. Remember to use your native tongue.

5. Possess Primary Expertise

Being good at one’s specialty is a boon to productivity, and it serves to cement your reputation for technical excellence.

6. Retains a Working Technical Knowledge

The IT work environment demands knowledge of technologies and processes that surround and interact with a given proficiency.

7. Shares Tech Know-How

Adopting the role of teacher and mentor has several advantages. For starters, it is an exercise in relationship-building and proves evidence of one’s professional value.

8. Enjoys Learning

Every IT pro must love to learn because the pace of technological change necessitates it. 

9. Works Well in Teams

To embrace a long-term career, it is essential to have a cooperative mentality to build lasting relationships.

10. Is an Out-of-the-Box Thinker

Creativity is the bride of innovation. In a problem solving environment, it is indispensable.

11. Views Problems as a Way to Learn

Tackling new problems with an open mind is the key to growing as an IT professional.

12. Loves Technical Challenges

Finding technical solutions in your spare time is a sure sign of success in the profession.
