Discipline. Most people have already forgotten what this word actually means. Here in the Philippines, it is a somewhat forgotten practice, especially in the case of employee and manager relations. Most company managers here are often too relaxed and lack discipline on instilling their respective set of rules and regulations for each employee. Thus, they find their operations also lack productivity. In this article for the Manila Bulletin, Ruben Anlacan Jr. tries to share some of the more important things to consider in how to really discipline your employee:
Know the purpose of the action by having thorough Knowledge of the Rules
As a manager, it would definitely help if you have a firm grasp of the company bylaws, particularly the Employee Manual/Handbook. Before confronting the employee about his transgression, you must first keep in mind the right reasons for the disciplinary action. Your actions must be within the parameters of your employee or company manual. This is to be consistent and to avoid legal problems. Your manual must be continuously updated to improve the rules and to keep up with the latest labor related rulings.
Emphasize preventive discipline & know how to motivate to comply
Preventive discipline is designed so as to focus on promoting desired behavior rather than looking for mistakes to punish. This is one of the ways to also motivate employees positively. One of the most important ways to encourage is that management must set an example. Another way is to be fair in the application of the rules. Favoritism is a leading cause of demotivation.
The method of disciplining employees is essential for every manager. Organization heads need to learn how to effectively motivate people while infusing them with discipline. Any business or company with a disciplined set of workers is more likely to last long in a today’s competitive world.
