How to Say Goodbye to a Coworker Who Has Been Laid Off

Layoffs are the trickiest goodbyes of all. Cynthia Measom writes for Chron about how to do it in the most respectful way. For starters, keep it simple. Give your condolences without coming across disingenuous, and maintain eye contact. Give a handshake, a hug, or a good old shoulder pat according to whatever is most appropriate. If your coworker is open to talking about it, let it happen. People appreciate a chance to vent. And if your coworkers are up to it, sign a farewell card or pitch in for a small gift.
