Aligning Projects with Business Strategy

You know aligning projects with business strategy is good—but can you explain exactly why? This article on The Smart PM gives you that explanation, and perhaps explains it even a bit further than what you already understand. For instance, consider this research conducted by Athabasca University:

The Athabasca University research was conducted in more than 60 organizations around the world and had the cooperation of more than 45 researchers who conducted over 400 interviews. The research results showed that among the tangible benefits the organizations:

  1. Saved money and resources
  2. Increased profitability
  3. Retained customers
  4. Increased market share

Among the intangible benefits, the organizations:

  1. Attained strategic goals
  2. Improved corporate culture
  3. Innovated
  4. Improved quality of life of their community

These benefits, intangible or tangible, represent exactly what is necessary for businesses to survive in the current economic environment. IT in particular needs to make sure that every project it completes furthers the success of the company and offers the benefits listed above. There is, the article explains, sometimes a view of projects as individual efforts instead of small parts in a larger goal. By focusing more on business strategy, projects take on the more correct relationship of being a part, rather than an independent whole.
