No Stakeholder is Left Behind with a Stakeholder Governance Pyramid

Don’t Lose Track of the Stakeholders

Juggling stakeholders can leave you feeling like a single parent with a room full of toddlers begging for attention. The minute you forget one of them, disaster strikes. To keep this from happening to you, Andrew Makar suggests you make a governance diagram pyramid. This will not only help you keep track of everyone, but also help you see the big picture of how these stakeholders interact within the organization.

Vision Matters, Labels Don’t

You can sort these stakeholders not only by their level within the organization, but also how often you need to interact with them. Is this someone so important that you need to call a meeting every week, or is bi-weekly, or even monthly enough? Makar breaks the pyramid down into three categories: Executive Sponsors, Steering Team, and Core Program Team. The Executives are usually contacted once a month, the Steering Team bi-weekly, and the Core Program Team weekly. However, don’t get too hung up on labels. The exact same position could fall into different levels depending on the organization. Treat the pyramid as a living document that changes and grows with shifts within the company, but also as a visualization to make sure everyone’s needs are being met.
