How to Avoid Building a House without a Hammer

IT project management is one of those rare occupations that requires very little physical work. However, as Christian Bisson points out, trying to complete an IT project without the proper tools is like trying to build a house without a hammer. It’s not just difficult; it’s impossible.

Find Your Tools

First things first. Find the proper project management tool that fits your needs. You will need one that tracks project information, creates your project’s schedule, and helps communication between team members. Don’t be afraid to try out several tools, as one might not be sufficient for all these needs.</p>

Use Them Wisely

Then prepare document templates that will complement your PM tool. Bisson suggests these document templates should be used to estimate, show meeting agendas, and show lessons learned, among other things. Don’t be afraid to improve these documents, and your tools, as you go along. Continual improvement is crucial in keeping up with the project, and you might want to have your templates ready and open on your desktop so you’re not tempted to skip this step.

Don’t Ignore Your Limitations

Finally, remember emails are not a PM tool. Just because you have something written down in an email doesn’t mean this is a substitute for a more organized function. Even in carefully labeled folders, it can take a long time to go through emails and find the information you are seeking.
