Don’t Align with the Business, Integrate into It!

Aligning IT with the business is a top concern with CIOs everywhere. However, it’s a totally false concern that if handled correctly can disappear completely, according to Larry Bonfonte. IT should automatically be part of the business, and by treating IT as something to be aligned, the problem is only being further aggravated.

You wouldn’t ask a CMO or a CFO if they needed to be aligned with the business, because they already consider themselves the business. The same should be said of the CIO. To solve the problem IT needs to step up and start acting like they are part of the business instead of separate entity. The quickest way to do this is for IT to learn to “speak business.” In addition to being tech savvy, they have to be able to understand their business counterparts. Only then will the business begin to give IT top consideration at the next meeting.
