Welcome to the future. If you take a look around, you’ll see it’s dominated by the millennial generation, and their movements are quick and jumpy. In fact, research suggests you’ll have a hard time keeping a millennial employee for longer than two years, which means you’ve got to bring new hires up to speed fast.
Greg Sanker suggests you do this through ITSM. He believes the only way most companies will survive the job-changing generation will be to establish general processes that new employees will come into the job already knowing. Companies should all have a basic level of governance, best practices, and business outcomes that look the same no matter where you work. That way, hires can enter the organization knowing what they need to do, and precious time and money from their two years of employment won’t be spent training them.
If you have a hard time envisioning this, Sanker looks at the construction industry for an example. A general contractor can hire different sub-contractors for each project they begin, but they have a certain amount of trust in these sub-contractors because the basic rules of building a house will always be the same. The future of IT doesn’t have to look like a complex construction project, but it does look a lot like ITSM. It also looks like the millennial generation.
