How Much Coworker Socializing is Good for Your Career?

Jacquelyn Smith takes input from four experts for an article at Forbes on socializing in the workplace. The office has become a “home away from home” where many social needs are satisfied, and so productivity has become linked to maintaining healthy coworker relationships. It is important however to engage in social activities that only highlight your good qualities (Do not challenge someone to a game of foosball and kick the table over when you lose). But even grabbing coffee or celebrating a birthday can build necessary camaraderie in a team. Two signs that too much socializing is going on are that you do not have enough time anymore for regular friends and that your work productivity is on the decline. Play it by ear and understand that chitchat in moderation is healthy in the long run.
