The Need-to-Know Traits of a Great IT LeaderYou don’t have to be perfect to be a great IT leader. In fact, it can be good to have flaws. Rich Hein of gives 16 traits that make a successful IT leader, and perfection isn’t on the list. Being a great leader is about knowing your strengths and playing to them, but it’s also about knowing your weaknesses and surrounding yourself with a supportive team.

Likewise, you need to know your team and be in-tune to their needs. In short, you need to have emotional intelligence as well as the usual IT knowledge. Here are some of the traits that made Hein’s list:

  • Self-Awareness
  • The Ability to Delegate
  • Good Communication Skills
  • Empathy
  • Humor
  • An Understanding of the Customer

Know yourself. Know your team. Know the customer. Knowledge of IT is a great place to start, but it doesn’t make you the perfect leader. It won’t even ensure that you’re a good leader, unless you also develop an understanding of the people around you.
