One of the most critical responsibilities of the modern CIO is aligning IT and the business, but is it possible that IT and the business were aligned all along? Edwin Yapp makes the case for alignment, but encourages CIOs to step up their game in supporting the business. In a broad sense, IT has always touched with the business, but today’s organizations need complete and total alignment. Every team member should be able to sit down and discuss the business.
Ten years ago, it might have been enough for just 50% or even 30% of the team to understand businesses practices, but now it’s time to push for 100%. It’s the CIOs’ job to make this happen, and often it means the CIO needs to get close enough to business counterparts to be treated as a partner. It’s not about just alignment, but the ways that IT is engaged with the business.
