Why Good Management Doesn’t Equal Good Innovation

Earning praise in the present doesn’t mean the organization is prepared for the future. In fact, even the best project manager may be guilty of poor innovation. Pearl Zhu of FutureOfCIO.com gives us reasons why a “good” project manager isn’t always great.  

It all starts with a false sense of complacency. A good project manager may be following the best practice current practices, but not working on contemplating the future. A good innovator will be able to see the current situation through different lenses, not just the one that works.

A good project manager will put emphasis on controlling the project. However, sometimes it’s ok to lose control; or, at least, to loosen it. Unleash potential talent from within the team. Put together an innovation support system, but don’t be afraid of the change.

Finally, it’s not always the manager’s fault that the plan lacks innovation. Project managers are praised when a project goes well, but one slip and all the blame is laid on that one person. The culture of the organization needs to support change, and the project manager can take charge from there.
