Produce a Fruitful Project with Portfolio Management

What do IT projects have in common with a bowl of fruit? Sometimes you need to figure out if all your pieces are fresh. This might sound like some kind of bizarre riddle, but Henny Portman uses this analogy to make a valid point about the importance of portfolio management.

Sometimes you can’t just look at something as a whole and pinpoint the problem. Everything might look good mixed together, but it’s as they say: one bad apple can spoil the barrel. First you need to take everything out of the bowl. Figure out how many pieces you are looking at, and group them according to type. Only then will you be able to locate the fruit that’s gone sour.

Maybe the metaphor is a bit extreme, but you have to admit that everyone wants their project to be fruitful. Portfolio management might be just what you need to get your next project to produce the results you need.
