Know the Terms to Win at Project Management

Quick! For $300, what’s the exact definition of a project plan? If you said that it’s the document describing the processes, tools, and techniques used to control the project, you’d be exactly right. For $500, could you tell me the name of the bar chart that depicts activities as blocks over time? The correct answer is: Gantt chart.

Unfortunately, project management isn’t all fun and games, but the risk involved can be just as stressful as a game of Jeopardy! Before you find yourself faced with the million dollar question, brush up on some of the basics from Andrew Makar’s TechRepublic.com article on project management terms.

  • Scope: the way you describe the boundaries of the project; it defines what the project will deliver and what it will not deliver.
  • Planning Poker:  an estimation game created by Mike Cohn of Mountain Goat Software.  Planning Poker is used to estimate individual user stories as a team activity. The team gathers and reviews user stories one at a time.
  • Constraints: limitations that are outside the control of the project team and need to be managed around. They are not necessarily problems, but limitations that must be taken care of from within.
