How to Become the Machiavellian CIO

Who should your idol be? If you’re a CIO, suggests Niccolo Machiavelli. Now, before you pull out your 15th century Italian philosopher costume, you may first want to try the Machiavelli mindset on for size.

CIOs are often at the center of a conflict. Sometimes, it’s justified and other times it’s due to conditions beyond their control. To avoid this, become the predator instead of the prey. If your position on the food chain is determined by how strong a leader you are, then a wolf is the perfect animal to imitate. Wolfs have strong predatory instincts, but they are also social animals. It’s the perfect survival combination.

Machiavelli believed in using power to your advantage. It’s an essential leadership tool, and you will have to use all your tools to persuade large groups of people to support your project. So maybe you should try becoming Machiavelli for a day. You may like the mentality so much that you’ll decide to keep it year round. We just suggest that you ditch the philosopher robes after the 31st
