Change within an organization can be a slow process. However, if you put in the effort, it doesn’t have to a fruitless one. Pearl Zhu of FutureOfCIO.com, identifies three key reasons why change management is a difficult process.
First, leaders fail to communicate the vision. You really can’t do this enough. If change is going to be successful, people need to see that you have reasons.
Second, take a “top-down approach.” Always drive your strategy through the organization. Be cool and assume acceptance. Confidence is critical if you want others to follow your lead.
Finally, don’t declare victory too soon. When people believe the mission is already accomplished, they will return to their old ways; and you will find all your progress has suddenly vanished. Also, you can’t declare victory until you have effectively measured all progress, so don’t be premature.
While these three tips will point you well on your way to success, don’t be afraid to make adjustments as needed. Change can be a lot of things, but it doesn’t have to be impossible if you both strategize your moves but also roll with the punches.
