The Metamorphosis of the CIO

Change is coming to your business. If it isn’t, you’ve got even more to worry about. Jim Stikelether of the Harvard Business Review writes that innovation is the only way to survive in the future. We have already begun to see a drastic change in the way businesses are run. Stikelether calls the businesses of the past “hierarchical, fixed, integrated, transaction-based and risk averse.” However, the shift is moving toward customer engagement and collaboration between employees and partners. Companies that aren’t working toward this change will be stuck in a static business model that will eventually go under.

So how can the CIO help? The CIO’s role is more important than ever. Someone with insight into both the business and the technology world, the CIO is in the unique position to foster that change that encourages customer interaction. However, all the emphasis should not be put on technology. It is how the management adapts that will truly save the organization. If a company can show management innovation, they can weather can any changes that come their way. The CIO will need to one of the leaders that are ahead of the change.
