IT Failure and the Dehumanization of the Workforce

When a project fails or goes overtime and over budget, it’s the workers who often suffer the blame. However, Frank Wander of CIOinsight.com offers a new perspective. As a former CIO, it has been his job to perform complete turnarounds of corporations that were failing fast. What was the problem? The workers weren’t being treated as human beings.

Wander explains that IT professionals are craftsmen, not just wheels in the machine. The main difference between IT craftsmen today and the craftsmen of the preindustrial era is not just the work being produced but the relationships that surround it. IT work is collaborative. It takes hundreds of minds to contribute to the final product. If the relationship between coworkers is rocky; or, worse, the workers are mistreated by management, it kills productivity. If you want the project to be a success, the workers must be appreciated, listened to, and understood. It is only then that we will begin to see less project failure.
