Does Vision Kill Execution?

executedSometimes good leadership is about learning what not to do, and when not to do it. If there’s one mistake that project leaders can easily make, it’s having too grand a vision. While there’s nothing wrong with seeing the big picture and having high hopes for the future, sometimes it’s enough to just concentrate on the here and now. Pam Stanton makes three major points about what project managers do that unintentionally discourages team members.

  • Don’t distract the team with tangents
  • Don’t disrupt momentum
  • Don’t overload with vision to the point that a team feels overwhelmed

Stanton says that the project vision is like a gigantic elephant. If you want your team to eat that elephant, you’re doing to have to cut it into pieces for them. You can’t expect them to swallow it whole. If you don’t take the time to cut your vision down to size, you may find yourself crushed by the elephant in the room.
