What does IT have in common with a great work of art? If you guessed that both required hard work, creativity, and a dedication to craft, you might be on the right track. However, James Staten of the Forrester blog has another similarity for you, and it has to do with variety of opinions. He claims that beauty is in the eye of the beholder for a reason. If you go to an art gallery and listen to the people around you, they will no doubt have different takes on the famous paintings around them. IT can be the same way. If you treat IT as a collaborative effort, opening up discussion with customers, partners, and other trusted third parties, you might see your IT department grow in ways that you would never have foreseen on your own.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that you should quit examining historical corporate data, but we need to start thinking outside of the same people doing the same work in their isolated offices. Collaboration is a powerful tool, and all it takes is the right third party to provide a vision for your organization’s future.
