Forget the midlife crisis. Nothing’s scarier than the midcareer slump. If you feel this might be happening to you, Kevin Casey has advice for this critical part of your career. Whether you want to catapult to the top of the corporate ladder, or just need to revamp your current position, these tips will help you make the most of your career.
•Become an expert: Now is not the time to know a little bit of everything. Latch onto your main skillset and run with it. People who get promotions are the experts in their field.
•Get involved outside your company: It might seem like nobody has time to do this, but that’s exactly why it will put you ahead of the rest.
•Find a mentor: Is there someone within your company who understands the politics of the organizations and might be able to help you? Find that person. You’re going to need a confidant.
•Don’t be afraid of greener pastures: Sometimes moving up means moving on. Even if you enjoy your current job, it may be time to consider whether you want to spend the rest of your career there.
Whatever you end up doing, don’t be afraid to embrace the middle of your career. A temporary slump might be the perfect time to kick start the rest of your life.
