What’s Next in Supply Chain?

Supply chain journalists and bloggers must own a lot of crystal balls, because they sure love to write about the future. Karsten Horn discusses for Supply Chain Digital the innovative technologies that will be transforming the supply chain in new ways. Chief among these innovations is 3D printing, which is expected to be involved in the creation of 80 percent of finished goods by 2020. Next is social media, which promises to offer more accessibility and transparency with regard to information to consumers, as well as simply providing people within the supply chain a way to communicate more effectively. Then of course there is cloud technology, which the author notes often offers better security than the businesses themselves can provide. Better technology means increased globalization, which means even more expansive supply chains; logistics must be improved if businesses are to hold it all together moving forward. Taking a multi-echelon, bird’s eye view approach to managing the supply chain will help mitigate risk and improve product availability.
