Behaviors of Successful Project Managers

lionFloat like a butterfly, sting like a bee. Embody the behaviors that will set you apart as a leader who gets the job done. Dr. Andrew Makar writes a blog post at TechRepublic on three leadership behaviors that are a blueprint for success:

  1. Demonstrate a drive for results.
  2. Demand the truth.
  3. Demonstrate courage.

Worthwhile projects can often be long, stressful affairs, and you mitigate the pain by focusing squarely on the end goal. Whatever it takes to get the desired outcome should be what you are doing, even if it means chipping in and getting your hands dirty with simple menial tasks if the situation calls for it. Demanding the truth from your team means not settling for prettied explanations of why things are not working out right. The truth may be ugly, but you and the team have to be willing to stare it in the face if you are to figure out how to make it better. In that same vein, display the courage to tell stakeholders when problems have arisen and ask for outside help when necessary. Even be able to make the tough call that a project should be canceled. It takes guts to be a successful project manager. Do you have it in you?
