IT Projects Should Start with People

people chessOutside vendors are happy to sell your organization the solution to its technology concerns. In fact, they might want to sell it to your organization multiple times, without IT’s input. As Paul Venezia discusses at InfoWorld, when concurrent projects at an organization exist in isolation from each other, money often gets spent on buying separate technology for each project when much less money could have been spent buying one set of technology that could meet the needs of multiple projects. If you want to minimize the number of wheelbarrows of cash your organization is giving to the vendors, then IT people need to be involved in the project process from the beginning, being invited to any meetings that might involve IT. When IT workers are coordinated and understand the various similarities between projects, they can map out a course of action that streamlines the use and acquisition of technology to keep costs down.
