How to Be Assertive at Work

Anne Zimmerman at Women’s Health wants to help you be assertive with an adversarial coworker with five quick tips. Think before you speak, and try to use phrasing that is not accusatory when expressing gripes. Maintain good manners in conversation even when it is evident that you want to push the other person off a cliff. Be diplomatic and stay in the here-and-now so that you do no waste energy on gossip and spiteful venting. Recognize that if you do not like someone, they probably do not like something about you either, and be honest and receptive to each other’s concerns. And finally, let it all go once the trouble has passed. Focus on building a career for yourself, not a grave plot for your enemies.
