Be More Assertive (and Feel Good About It)

You want to speak up and disagree with your boss, but the words just do not come out. Elizabeth DeVita-Raeburn at CNN understands your feelings and writes about how you can find the fire in your belly to voice your concerns aloud. She describes specific business-setting goals and how to achieve them. If you want a raise, ask for it after a major accomplishment, and cite specific valuable contributions you have made to the company as well as contributions you still want to make. If you want an idea green-lit, wait until after others have spoken and see if your idea can “piggyback” on another’s idea. This increases likelihood of approval and fosters collaboration. Just remember to keep your pitch brief; three to five sentences is the sweet spot.
