A Guide for the Timid: How to Be More Assertive at Work

Becoming assertive is all about breaking down barriers. Jane Long writes about the things that get in the way and what you can do about it. Lacking confidence in yourself, fearing the fallout of bold action, and fretting over what other people think of you are all things that can bog you down. To circumvent these barriers, speak up within your sphere of influence above and beyond what is called for to demonstrate the value of your ideas. Do not over-apologize for minor failings, since it is expected that no one succeeds at everything all the time. And finally, you have to be able to just ask for things sometimes. If your boss can ask you to stay late on a regular basis, you can ask for a raise once.
