The Best Ways to Manage Office Stress

After financial worries, job pressures are the second worst cause of stress. Sue Shellenbarger has investigated the ways employers are trying to create less stressful workplaces. “Mindful-based stress reduction” is one of the most effective methods studied, in which there are typically eight, two-hour weekly sessions, plus a final full-day retreat, where “meditation techniques like breathing and bringing thoughts back when they wander” are taught. The downside, of course, is the amount of time it takes. Another method is “mindful communication,” in which people visualize themselves in a meeting actively listening rather than wondering who to blame for things.
