actingBroaching the subject with a subordinate that something is wrong can be an awkward, painful process for everyone involved. Calvin Sun at the TechRepublic offers ten tips on how to prepare yourself and ease the blow for the subordinate:

  1. Address the matter as soon as possible.
  2. Set a specific time and place.
  3. Sit, don’t stand.
  4. Keep in mind the location.
  5. Focus on the issue, not the person.
  6. Be specific about the concern.
  7. Be collaborative.
  8. Avoid negative statements.
  9. Encourage the subordinate.
  10. Document the meeting.

The goal is to rehabilitate the employee if possible. Make the effort to get the best out of your people, even if it means having an awkward discussion.
