People get a lot from Star Wars. For some it's a lesson on the perseverance of good over evil; for others it's a great imagining of what a universe made of space flight and galactic adventure might look like. For Alex Knapp of Forbes Magazine, however, it's about leadership lessons. In particular, what the Galactic Empire did wrong in organizational structure, stakeholder management, and failure tolerance. The way Knapp sees it, the Galactic Empire made 5 big mistakes. Among them are putting leaders ahead of institutions (dissolving the Galactic Senate? Big mistake!) and removing the possibility for people to have a stake in the organization (thereby making them not care about the quality of work they do). Knapp goes on to illustrate that a lack of failure tolerance – in this case, Vader's knack for using the force to choke people to death – doesn't allow for failure to teach and make an organization stronger. Each of the article's points are valid for a CIO to remember. After all, it could mean the difference between Galactic Supremacy and destruction!
