What Outstanding Employees Do: Don’t Just Ask, Watch Then Ask

How many times have you seen someone do something amazing, only to have the same person say “I dunno — I just do it” when you ask them to explain just how they achieve such an outstanding result? The trick of figuring out your outstanding employees, according to Leon Noone, is to watch first: figure out for yourself a few elements of what makes them outstanding (for instance, do they arrive early to every appointment?), and then ask them about that aspect. Outstanding performers are more likely to know why they do certain things over a general sweeping understanding of what makes them so valuable.
