Video: IT and business leadership advice from CIOs

The question: what's the best IT advice you have ever been given? The respondents: CIOs like Dr. Phil Shelley of Sears Holding Corporation, Tim Shaefer of Northwestern Mutual, and Tom Lethem of Capitol Insurance Companies, among others. The answer: varied. Some of the CIOs point to the importance of people over technology, knowing what makes your employees tick and do good work. Others suggest being an innovation agent above all things, understanding where the future is heading and getting there as quickly as possible. Still others say all of IT is people business: customers, employees, and the board room are all people, and treating them like people is the best way to get further, faster. Between each piece of advice is an overarching statement: IT isn't just IT””at least not for a CIO. Some of the most important understandings and decisions come from outside of the IT organization for a CIO, and being able to recognize that is a key lesson from all of these IT leaders.
