AmeriHealth Mercy needed to find a way to deliver it's strategy throughout the company and stay competitive despite new healthcare law and an increasingly challenging landscape of competing companies. It was decided that the best way to drive competitive advantage was to form a program management office (PMO) to systematically deliver strategy across all programs. The PMO director decided on a organisation project management approach, and the gears were put in motion moving forward: For AmeriHealth Mercy, organization project management is a critical driver for business success. This approach aligns the organization's resources to its strategy through disciplined portfolio management, integrating the business needs of the strategy into programs and projects so it can deliver the intended benefits to the organization. It then executes strategy-driven initiatives through superior project management. This systematic approach aligns work to the strategies of the organization and delivers results that advance the organization's strategy. The improvement plan was put into motion after a 2008 assessment, and improvements became apparent. Eventually the PMO went from being a reactionary effort to a strategic resource. Rather than reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, it began reporting to the Chief of Staff for the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. The PMO's expanded role continues to grow as it continues to bring value to AmeriHeath Mercy.
