Best Practices for Rolling Out ITIL

This white paper by Tom Farre helps explain the best practices around ITIL, namely how a gradual approach and advanced planning can help support a successful implementation. After a brief overview of ITIL’s history, Farre goes on to list the benefits and challenges of ITIL. One of the challenges, unsurprisingly for anyone who’s attempted an ITIL implementation, is taking on too much at once: After buying into ITIL conceptually, some organizations try to implement it all at once, plunging into a broad initiative that lacks targeted business objectives. According to Steve Brasen, IT analyst at EMA and an expert in change and configuration management, this mistake accounts for most ITIL failures. The best practices include rating your own IT organization’s process maturity, creating a project roadmap, and writing a service improvement plan (SIP). Furthermore, considering what software tools and how to develop ITIL expertise can remove some of the growing pains IT has come to expect with an ITIL implementation.
