Take a look at Eric Allais article about how to measure the performance of a warehouse. Turn the article on its side and don’t those same metrics measure the performance of your entire supply chain! Eric points out that when you implement measures, you need to determine what your customers care about most. And, isn’t that reflective of a PERFECT ORDER (which, of course, is an order in which customers receive the right product, on time, undamaged, and with the correct documentation). How often do you fulfill that requirement and at what cost when you don’t! Eric also points out that instead of becoming overwhelmed with data, managers should identify and focus on the most useful metrics to gather, report, and apply.
