7 Must-Have Project Management Skills for IT Pros

Just because someone has the title of project manager doesn't mean they are capable of managing products. It’s that working premise that Jennifer Lonoff Schiff offers up this list of 7 must-have project management skills which separate great project managers from just project managers in name only. The list comes from a recent CIO.com survey where executives and project management experts listed what skills assure a successful project. The list includes:

  1. High levels of organization
  2. Knowing how to lead
  3. Effective communication
  4. Knowing how and when to negotiate
  5. Detail oriented
  6. Recognition of problems and solutions
  7. Possessing the right technical skills

If you’d want to group the skills even more, it’s possible to simply say “a good project manager recognizes what needs to be done, who can do it, and how to enable them to succeed.” The article uses the insights of various professionals to help support the list, such as this detail on leadership from Lew Sauder, senior project manager at Geneca: “Projects need to be led in a fashion that builds consensus while also fleshing out the real risks and roadblocks,” he says. “Effective project managers paint a picture of a better tomorrow and inspire confidence in their team's abilities to realize that vision. They build credible relationships with key stakeholders to ensure alignment to the project's objectives and exude the confidence necessary to hold everyone participating in the project accountable.” It’s clear that those who responded and helped build the list of skills all focus on the ability of a project manager to think on their feet and react to new information in a timely manner (and one that ultimately leads to a positive outcome. If you were to hold this list up against your own project managers (or even yourself), how would you score, and where can you become stronger as a leader?
